2018's FIFA World Cup By The Numbers

Football, soccer, spaghetti bowl, however you want to call it, we all know what it is: it's the biggest sport in the world and on June 14, 2018 the largest international sporting competition will start in Russia. To please both the US and the non-US fans we'll use the terms football as well as soccer (we might also go with spaghetti bowl, since we're always hungry for spaghetti).

In order to generate more buzz around this event, our researchers put together a bunch of stats to tickle the brains of all you football nerds. But before diving in, here's an embedabble infographic full of interesting stats, followed by a short history of FIFA and the World Cup.

World Cup History

FIFA or Fédération Internationale de Football Association is the organization founded in 1904 that governs over football, futsal and beach soccer. Its membership counts over 200 national associations and it acts as an ambassador between countries as well, since everybody seems to speak football.

FIFA held the first World Cup 88 years ago in 1930 and since then it occurred regularly every four years, with two exceptions: during the First and Second World War. The inaugural FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay and the home country won the tournament, beating Argentina in a final that ended with a 4-2 score.

National Team Trophies

Benjamin Franklin once said: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." This applies to soccer as well because winning a bunch of World Cups in the past doesn't represent the actual form of a national team. Since FIFA organizes continental competitions as well, we decided to take a look at the national accomplishments of every participant in this World Cup.

All in all, we expect another great tournament filled with drama, beautiful goals and, hopefully, a new generation of Messis and Ronaldos. Also, keep in mind that at the end of the competition we're going to publish another piece where we'll take a look at the World Cup revelations and see which players improved their market values the most.

Sources and Analysis: In order to calculate these rankings, we used data gathered from FIFA.com, Transfermarkt.com and our love for spaghetti. The data and infographic is based on the official final national squads announced for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
